Pick the coverage that fits your life, not the other way around.

Here is what each product does, who it suits, and what to watch for. If you would rather skip the reading, the three-question quiz below will point you to a starting place.

Mortgage protection

A policy sized to your home loan, so the mortgage can be paid off or kept current if you die.

Fits when
You just bought or refinanced a home, or your family could not make the payment without your income.
What you pay
A fixed monthly price matched to the length of your loan.
Good to know
The benefit goes to your family, not the bank, so they decide how to use it. Many plans offer optional riders for serious illness or disability, at an added cost.

Final expense

A smaller whole life policy meant to cover funeral costs and final bills, so your family is not paying out of pocket.

Fits when
You want your final costs handled and do not need a large policy.
What you pay
A locked monthly price that does not increase. Coverage stays in force as long as premiums are paid.
Good to know
The benefit is paid to the person you name, and they can use it for anything, not only the funeral. Depending on your health, some policies pay a reduced benefit if death occurs in the first two years.

Indexed universal life

Permanent life insurance with cash value that can grow based on a market index, with a floor against market losses.

Fits when
You want lifelong coverage and a policy that can build value you can use later, and you plan to keep it for the long run.
What you pay
Flexible premiums. More than term coverage for the same benefit, because part of what you pay builds cash value.
Good to know
Growth is limited by caps and participation rates set by the carrier, and policy charges can reduce the cash value. Loans and withdrawals reduce the death benefit, and the policy can lapse if it is not funded enough.

Fixed indexed annuities

A contract with an insurance company that grows retirement savings with index-linked interest while protecting your principal from market losses.

Fits when
You are near or in retirement and want growth potential without market risk, or income you cannot outlive.
What you pay
A lump sum or a series of deposits.
Good to know
Interest is credited up to limits set in the contract. Withdrawals above the free amount in the early years carry surrender charges, so this is money you should not need right away.

Indexed products are not direct investments in the stock market or any index. Guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Product features, riders, and availability vary by state and carrier. This page is general education, not tax, legal, or investment advice.

Questions people ask us

How much does life insurance cost?

It depends on your age, your health, whether you use tobacco, the type of policy, and how much coverage you want. Younger and healthier means cheaper, which is the best reason not to wait. A quote costs nothing and takes a few minutes.

How much coverage do I need?

A common starting point is enough to replace your income for several years, pay off the mortgage and other debts, and cover any goals like school for the kids. An agent can walk you through it and give you a number.

Can I have more than one policy?

Yes. Plenty of people pair mortgage protection for the years the loan is open with a smaller final expense policy that never expires.

Who gets the money?

Whoever you name as beneficiary. The benefit is paid directly to them, and they choose how to use it.

What if my health is not perfect?

You may still have options. Different carriers treat the same condition differently, and part of our job is knowing which ones to approach.
